I loved the four-page tribute to murdered abortion provider Dr. George Tiller in the latest issue of Ms. Magazine (“A Man Who Trusted Women”). Author Michele Kort painted a full picture of a man who stood strong against a constant barrage of protests, death threats, and even a previous attempt on his life.
Kort mentions that many abortion providers face similar – if not as extreme – circumstances. In many states, there are few who provide this service, adding one more obstacle to ending an unwanted pregnancy. In my state, there are only two who provide this service – one in Little Rock and one here in my hometown, Fayetteville. I have seen the protesters across the street from Dr. Harrison’s office. They seem peaceful, standing with signs and praying. I respect their right to express their beliefs. But do they respect my right to make decisions about my own body? How long before one of them decides that standing peacefully isn’t cutting it, and resorts to violence?
I was relieved to read that attacks on abortion providers are classified as acts of domestic terrorism by the FBI. Now, if Scott Roeder is convicted of Tiller’s murder, will he be sent to Guantanamo?
